Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
Scope
Veterinary World recognizes the growing use of AI technologies in scientific research and scholarly communication. The journal supports the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI-assisted tools while maintaining the fundamental principles of scientific integrity, accountability, and human authorship.
Use of AI by authors
Authors may use AI-assisted technologies (e.g., large language models, grammar and language editing tools, image enhancement software, or coding assistants) to improve the readability, organization, or presentation of manuscripts. However, authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, interpretation, and integrity of all submitted work.
AI tools must not replace the intellectual contributions of the authors. Authors are accountable for verifying all content generated or assisted by AI, including references, factual statements, statistical interpretations, and scientific conclusions.
Disclosure requirements
If AI tools have been used during manuscript preparation, authors should provide a transparent statement in the manuscript (typically in the Acknowledgments or a dedicated section) describing:
The name of the AI tool and version (if available);
The purpose of its use;
The extent of its contribution.
Examples of acceptable uses include language editing, grammar correction, code assistance, and summarization. Authors must ensure that AI-generated content has been critically reviewed and validated by humans before submission.
Authorship
Artificial intelligence systems, chatbots, or large language models cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the work, approve the final manuscript, disclose conflicts of interest, or fulfill authorship criteria recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE).
All authors listed on a manuscript must be natural persons who have made substantial intellectual contributions and who accept full responsibility for the content.
Prohibited uses
Authors must not use AI tools to:
Fabricate, falsify, or manipulate research data or results;
Generate fake references or misleading citations;
Produce fraudulent images, figures, or graphical data;
Misrepresent AI-generated text or analyses as independent scientific findings;
Circumvent peer review or editorial processes;
Generate reviewer identities or peer-review reports.
Any form of scientific misconduct involving AI-assisted fabrication or manipulation will be handled according to the journal's ethical policies and the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Images and graphical materials
AI-generated or AI-modified images, figures, graphical abstracts, or illustrations must accurately represent the underlying scientific information. Manipulation that alters, fabricates, or misrepresents experimental observations is prohibited.
Authors may be required to provide original image files, metadata, or additional explanations regarding image processing during editorial evaluation.
Use of AI by reviewers
Peer reviewers must maintain confidentiality and should not upload submitted manuscripts, figures, or supplementary materials to publicly accessible AI systems or third-party platforms that may store, reuse, or disclose confidential information.
Reviewers remain solely responsible for the content and recommendations contained in their peer-review reports.
Use of AI by editors
Editors may use AI-assisted technologies to support administrative and editorial functions, such as plagiarism detection, language assessment, reviewer identification, and workflow management. However, all editorial decisions are made by qualified human editors and are based solely on scientific merit, originality, methodological rigor, and ethical considerations.
Compliance with ethical standards
Veterinary World follows the principles and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and other internationally recognized standards concerning the responsible use of AI in scholarly publishing. The journal reserves the right to request additional information regarding the use of AI tools and to reject or retract manuscripts when inappropriate or undisclosed AI use compromises the integrity, reliability, or transparency of the scientific record.
